The Central Union High School marching band is among the best, most talented in the Imperial Valley, hence the name, the Great Spartan Band. The band first started marching on the Cal Jones Football Field at CUHS while under the direction of Jimmie Cannon (February 21, 1929 - May 21, 2009). In 1966, Mr. Cannon became the band director at CUHS, and continued to direct for the next 30 years. The current band director, Renee Baker, a student of Mr. Cannon's and CUHS Alumni, took over after his retirement.
The Great Spartan band has traveled to various places such as Mexico City, Hawaii, Florida, Washington DC, Mexico and Tijuana, and New Orleans for competition, events, and parades. The band has also participated in many UC college band days: USC Concert of the Band and UCLA Band Festival. Some parades the Spartan Band have marched in include: the Mother Goose Parade, Disneyland Parade, and Columbus Day Parade. The Great Spartan Band is widely admired and always puts on a great show. The band alone has over one hundred instrumentalists plus flags, majorettes, and our award-winning Sparteen Drill Team. Over ten percent of Central Union High School's students is involved in the band program.
